Here’s to a fast/full convalescence! And not to make light of any of this, but I had to laugh at the “pac manned” description.

P.S. 11/10 on the mustache.

Hey, congratulations on the impending increase in freedom and mobility! I think it's sensible that you're mentally allocating a little extra recovery time; abdominal surgery is what it is, but I very much hope that it's on the lowest end of the time period they're projecting. You are so much fitter now, and I think it can help when it's not your first rodeo - you have that bit more confidence about moving around afterwards, there isn't quite the same unknown factor (though, as I know well, there's also the anticipation of the known). I hope you have a great pile of books and TV planned for the rest parts, but let me know if you're in need of any recs because we have demolished a huge quantity of television lately!

Netflix has a great series called Knightfall, about the latter days of the Knights Templar, and if you're in a historical mood generally there's also a German series called Babarians, about the conflict between the Romans and the Celtic tribes.

I'm obsessed with Killing Eve, a spy show that's in the neighbourhood of Hannibal as far as plausibility is concerned, but also fortunately in the neighbourhood of Hannibal where "cat and mouse game between pursuer and pursued, with bonus erotic obsession" is concerned. It's also the best show I've seen recently in terms of interesting middle-aged female characters - Sandra Oh and Fiona Shaw are terrific (and the latter's character is reportedly getting a spin-off show).

Again re: female characters, Hacks is really great too. It's about an ageing stand-up comedian whose career is slipping, and who drafts in a fairly obnoxious 25-year-old writer to add a new spark to her routine. The conflict/mentorship between them is really interesting and layered, and the show has a lot to say about how the perception of success or failure changes or sticks to women in media/creative fields.

Proud of you Mark! I have been through a kidney removal and 5 years later a new kidney. I know if I can handle it, you got this in the bag. With Janice there, I am sure the levity will make recovery easier. Good luck my friend.
