I have some thoughts on Ms. Marvel that have nothing to do with its origins, starting with the interesting choice of the name "Kamala" out of the vast selection of beautiful and significant Muslim names. However, since mentioning those thoughts right now would just lead to my being accused of being a looney conspiracy theorist, I'll hold off until I see how things develop.

So, hold that thought.

I had to do a bit more than my usual caveats in order to state my problems with the show. I understand.

I'll just say that when it comes to news analysis, I'm right more often than I'm wrong. We'll see.

I think I’ve mentioned it before, but the only MCU movie I’ve seen is Iron Man. Going to the movies has become almost a biennial event for me (much to my wife’s chagrin), but I’d like to see what all the hype is about.

Well, you can certainly catch up at your leisure, since most everything is on a streaming platform or a DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack with bonus features. It might be a bit of a slog, but watching the movies in the order they were released is really helpful, especially after the first six, because story elements carry over from film to film. It's almost passe now, but at the time, it was a huge deal in that no studio had ever done that before. Image in 1977, with George Lucas saying, I've got this great movie I want to make, but first I have to make three before it. Okay, well, he kinda did say that, but the result is, he BARELY got Star Wars made at all. For a studio to say, "You want an Avengers movie? Fine. But we have to make five movies just so we can make that sixth one." It was insane at the time. But now they have changed the way movies and TV are shot.

All that to say, "Yeah, you probably should check out the other Marvel movies." If you liked comics as a kid, they are amazing. If you came to comics later in life, they are pretty damn cool. If super heroes was never really your thing, they will be very hit-and-miss, depending on your other predilections and interests.

I'm a bit sad about the loss of the animated bits in Ms. Marvel too. I adored that, and if I'd seen it as a kid it would've become, hands down, my favourite show ever. It gave the show its own personality - or rather, it expressed Kamala's winsomely creative, exuberant personality. Heartstopper over on Netflix has likewise (though more subtly) used bits of animation to translate the source comics' visual identity into the show, so maybe we have a burgeoning trend happening. Which makes it all the more of a pity that Ms. Marvel has put the brakes on that stuff.

I suspect this has something to do with the incredible pressure the VFX artists are under, though - they've just gone public about the unreasonable expectations from Marvel in terms of rapid changes, more fully-realised options for scenes in unfeasible turnaround times, etc. With all that money they're making from the MCU, it's a pity it can't be translated into more time - or at least, Marvel might need to be more realistic about what's possible.

I thought they might have been setting too high a bar, especially since now I know she won’t be stretching. I think I would have preferred her original powers, and wish they’d spent their money there instead.

Pogo is certainly more interesting in season three than in season two-but he's just shown up in my viewing, so I'll just see where it goes. I have enjoyed all three seasons of TUA so far, though my bar for weirdness is still DOOM PATROL. ;) (And I am reallllly hoping to see a bit more of what Hargreaves actually is...) Ms. Marvel, well, haven't made it past the first episode yet-cute, but, like you, I'm not exactly the target audience. I will have to get back to you on Love and Thunder-I have not seen it yet, but am looking forward to it. Ragnarok really grew on me in a second viewing, and after seeing Spiderhead on Netflix, my respect for Hemsworth as an actor just keeps increasing.

Hemsworth is irritatingly great at just about whatever he wants to do. Chris Evans is, too.

Feel free to come back here and let me know what you think about Love & Thunder. It's not a divisive movie, but there's a few people grousing about it.

Will do-I think we talked a bit about Ragnarok back when-TW hadn't quite found the balance between Strindberg and South Park, but he was getting there...(And honestly, I'd be happy if he did a bit more acting. He was amazing in Jojo Rabbit.)
