I think my favorite movie he directed (but not starred in) is "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." I think it showed a real understanding, and respect, for southern eccentricity, though I'm not sure how much of this is the original book vs. the director's take. Either way, I think it's a really good movie with some great performances.
Oh, yes, that is a great example of when he's got a deft touch. I suspect that when he's not starring in the movie he's got more bandwidth for things like subtlety and nuance.
I'm reading Bogdanovich's WHO THE DEVIL MADE IT, and in the Don Siegel interview Siegel mentions how much Eastwood enjoys playing the anti hero, and appears unconcerned how his character looks in the films
I’m not objecting to his anti-heroes. Dirty Harry is a classic. I just think he went past his prime to pull it off in True Crime and phoned it in for White Hunter, Black Heart.
It's been a LONG time since I've seen either I remember that I wasn't particularly impressed with TRUE CRIME at the time. WHITE HUNTER i might revisit since I've been working my way the John Huston films (slowly)
We watched True Crime and a true crime and both were a fail. Okay, I’m not as clever as you but I’m trying. Lol. People need that watch Keeper of the Ashes (said in my dramatic voice) just for Kristen walking through the woods stroking the trees to the sad voiceover.
I might have been classed as a BOF for my music likes at the time , but punk re-ignited my interest in music and I reckon Bollocks is one of the great rock albums.
I'm a Gran Torino hater. The movie is so bad it actually contradicts a major plot point at the climax (the Hmong people never talk to outsiders then suddenly they do???). And if you hate GT then you naturally loath Cry Macho and I do.

I would love to see the movie redone with more of the Fidelity that people use to direct book adaptations these days.
In Eastwood defense— Hang ‘em High, Unforgiven.

I never saw Cry Macho. I think I dodged a bullet.
