"If this is the heat-death of the Twitter Universe, then pass me the sunscreen."

And save me a chaise lounge, please.

As someone that's terminally online, I've noticed that my feed seems to be a little calmer over the last few days. To be fair, that's to be expected after the midterms, but still...

I'd been hiding out in my Lists, but even the main timeline seems...I dunno, less chaotic?

P.S. "We don't have to like each other; we're family" could be my family's mantra.

I’m glad it’s not just me that has noticed the volume reduction.

And how smart are we, setting up substack accounts before everyone else tries to shoehorn in?

I went on Twitter this morning and the entire feed was a bunch of over-privileged overgrown adolescents screaming it was going to die any minute, and it was all Elon’s fault. What’s hilarious is a whole bunch of them are planning to swing over to the Fediverse, where they are due for a very rude awakening. After spending weeks, months, and years whining about how awful Twitter is about allowing “those people” to spew the same rubbish they do, they’re about to encounter a space where the rubbish gets thrown out because only reasonably adult discourse is acceptable. 🍿

I have been very interested to see where the people in the mass exodus will end up, and what on Earth makes them think it'll be any different.

Someone said recently that the Age of Social Media is over. I don't know about that, but I think as the kids fall back to AOL Chat Rooms--sorry, I mean, Discord and Livejournal--sorry, I mean, blogspot--dammit, no, I mean, wordpress sites, we'll see some civility creep back into the real world because you'll have to go to someone's house--virtual or otherwise--to have a conversation, and this notion of the "town square" will atrophy.

I’ve often suspected not rewarding a lack of self-discipline is one reason MeWe, which is a more that decent replacement for Faceborg, and the Fediverse never caught on with the Twitter masses. I know one of the instances I’m on has already shut down a few people who thought they could just swap trains and stay on the same track. Barely through the door and they started name-calling and trolling. Bye-bye!

On the other hand, someone a few weeks ago claimed someone was starting what sounded like the liberal version of Gab, which I gather was unironically to be named “Tribel”. Jack Dorsey was allegedly mumbling something about starting a new one, too. As I said: 🍿

I found Tribel interesting for about 5 minutes. My guess is their traffic spiked immediately after Musk bought Twitter, and dropped like a rock over the next 2-3 days.

Tribel, huh? Basically, the public space is eroding and everyone is making clubhouses and tree forts. Lovely.

Well, as long as I can still float a blog post, I will remain calm.
